  • VH1 Announces 2009 Divas

    0

A few months ago, VH1 announced that it would be reviving its Divas franchise. I began speculating about which artists I would most like to see. And by “artists”, I mean vocalists and real singers. I do not mean entertainers. I want females up there that can SANG!

Looks like VH1 feels the same way as the September 17th show from the Brooklyn Academy of Music Howard Gilman Opera House in Brooklyn, NY will feature Kelly Clarkson, Leona Lewis, and Adele. In their transparent attempt to gain ratings from the tween crowd, they also selected Miley Cyrus.

If they want someone from the realm of country, it should have been someone like Carrie Underwood, but I see what they’re doing. Miley isn’t terrible, but alongside bonafide singers like Kelly, Leona, and Adele, it’s clear she isn’t in the same league. Then again, there’s always a questionable performer or two for the Divas show. I guess Miley’s it this time around.

If I can take you back to my thoughts on this, back in April, you’ll see I wasn’t off in my predictions:

I would think, since the last Divas, singers that should be consider include Duffy, Adele, Leona Lewis, Kelly Clarkson, Pink, and Fergie.

    Man, I’m good!

Someone I think would be invited purely for the media attention is Rihanna. I love the girl’s songs as she is a pop music machine! She’s also in the direct eye of the media due to the Chris Brown situation (still smh at that), so Viacom may seek to take advantage of that. They’ve done it before. Other people who do not need to be invited: Britney, Ciara (I still love her though), Taylor Swift, and Miley Cyrus and all the current Disney ’stars’.

    Called it.

Rolling Stone’s blog has more on the show.

    And it’s about time!

Throughout the late 90s and early 00s, “Divas” was a yearly staple on VH1. It brought us some memorable performances and was, in general, a really big deal. IIRC. it was right up there with the MTV Video Music Awards in terms of the attention and press garnered by the event.

So, it comes with much excitement that I share that “Divas” is making its return to the network this year. Billboard brought the news earlier today, reporting that the show will “air live on September 17 from the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Howard Gilman Opera House in New York.” Good deal.
